Today, I Learned…

A Journal Entry

Today, I learned the same areas in your brain that light up when your learning also light up when you’re grateful.

Or express gratitude.

Apparently, it’s more productive to do that than write about negative stuff.

Although, some of the most interesting things I’ve ever read seem to come from less-than-positive experiences.

Maybe they’re not altogether negative. But they’re not necessarily trying to turn negatives into positives.

Experiences are what they are. Sometimes they don’t mean anything else.

But maybe I should try it. So here are a few things I’m grateful for:

  1. I’m grateful I still have my singing voice. I may never use it the way I always thought, but I can always use singing as an outlet if I want.
  2. I’m grateful I’ve never gone hungry. The only time I didn’t eat was when I didn’t want to, and I’ve always had a place to rest my head.
  3. I’m thankful for things that taste nice. Doesn’t have to be fancy; just food that’s genuinely enjoyable. That’s a luxury for some people.
  4. I’m grateful for some of the people in my life who energize me, despite my inability to be a consistent friend (at least from my perspective). Maybe they feel differently, but I’m genuinely in awe of the energy they have for other people, and I’m grateful to be on the receiving end.

I don’t think I’m an easy person to be around. This year has really blown for me, as I’m sure it has for many, and I’m surviving right now.

That’s where I’m at. I wish I could do more. But this is it for now.
